Richard Nixon has declared war on drugs in 1971. He announced to the Americans that Americaââ¬â¢s public enemy number one is drug abuse. Drug users are everywhere from their own homes, schools, communities, courts, jails, hospitals and prisons. Those who use drugs have nothing to good gain, it only causes problems. Children are neglected or abused, innocent civilians are robbed or even killed for money to buy and obtain drugs. Most eventually end up imprisoned for few years to live. The only ones benefiting from the drug wars are the drug dealers, drug cartels, and organized crime syndicates. Try to get to know the politically powerful within your organisation. Dont be afraid of them they are often much, more receptive to people who arent intimidated by them! Make sure they understand what you are trying to achieve. Deal with their reservations and make sure they understand that you are taking on board their views. If someone does try to undermine you, dont get drawn in. Simply be bold and assertive, but not aggressive. Make your points clearly and offer good will. If their negative behaviour persists, then ring fence them make sure they have as little as possible to do with your work.

The Pentateuch is comprised of the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The present business of Brocksweir and Sons Ltd has been in existence for over 50 years. The current managing director is Colin Weir the son of founder Paul Weir. Colin Weir took over the reins from his father 10 years ago and his mission is to take the business forward in the 21st Century. The company employs 250 people in various roles, but has managed to expand in some areas despite fierce competition from the Far East. The business markets are segmented on the basis of product into three distinct areas. These are: Castings Fabrications Machined parts All the castings are done in house using the foundry facilities, which operates three main processes. These are; gravity diecasting, high-pressure casting and sand casting. Most of the castings are produced in various aluminium alloys, although some work is performed in bronze, brass and steel. Fabrications are made on site and then installed at the customers premises although some fabrications have been made on site for customers. Machining is carried out in the modern workshops and ranges from simple lathes to complex Computer numerically controlled (CNCs). This part of the business has experienced considerable growth over the last 18 months. Three directors assist Colin Weir in the running of the company. Paul Morley the Marketing Director, John Nicholas the Financial Director and Dave Reilly the Operations Director who is responsible for production and supply chain operations. Brockweirs current operations are based on four sites with the foundry being based in the centre of the small town of Davenport. The site is very cramped and opportunities for expansion are non-existent. All the castings are made at the foundry and then taken to other sites to be machined, polished or powder coated. Each site is under the charge of a general manager who has responsibility for the day-to-day running of the site. Purchasing in the company comes under the control of John James the Head Buyer. James is a veteran in the metals business with over 30-years experience. He takes care of all the purchasing on the foundry site but has nothing to do with purchasing on the other sites which is usually dealt with by the general managers. James believes that purchasing is all about achieving the best price for the minimum amount of effort. Jamess main role is buying production materials and consumables. The directors handle any large capital purchases. Operations director Dave Reilly believes the purchasing function can be improved considerably. He decides to call in a team from the University of Dernol who have a highly respected logistics and supply chain research centre. The team is asked to investigate purchasing practices over the last 5 years and in particular: Average spend per supplier Methods of sourcing, supplier selection and appraisal Development of supplier relationships. Weir explains that the Super Heater Furnace Company has given a quotation to supply and install three five tonne furnaces. Vickery questions the rational behind only one quotation and Weir explains, We have always dealt with the Super Heater Furnace Company and never had any problems with them. Demand for sand castings in recent months has grown considerably and as a result of this the company has employed three additional die-casters. While the increase in business is pleasing, Vickery has discovered a number of issues associated with the sand casting operations. His predecessor John James had ordered resins in bulk, many of which have fairly short shelf lives. Resins are used to bind the sand together in the moulds prior to the casting. Most of the resins that Brocksweirs use are either phenolic or furan based, which presents the company with a number of additional environmental problems. An audit of the stores has identified about 20,000 of resins whose shelf lives have expired. As a consequence of this the company will now face a heavy bill for disposal of these resins as they are now classified as special waste. However, in order to take this advantage of the brains, we have to do something to lure them to stay within for which I daresay, India has to do a lot of work. Regarding the problem of how this brain drain can be stopped, the solution is not simple but yet it is not impossible. The Government must see that the working environment provided, and appreciation be given to good work. As for the pay packets, they can also be enhanced in order to attract at least a few of the brains who may be less ambitious and more patriotic. For, I believe that, several brains may prefer to stay back in India if the requisite changes are made for them in the entire system of working pattern. Thus, to prevent a brain drain from India it is not sufficient to just shout about it and make an issue of it. We must work towards the goal of providing them with at least the near amenities to them of what they would get in any of the foreign lands they may chose to go to. If we try this, we may succeed in holding back at least a few of them, for helping us to develop India. The brain drain may be causing concern to us as, the best of our Indian brains go out of the country, however, there is not only a black cloud of missing out on our best, there is also a silver lining to the drain. The brains that go out of India are by now such a substantial number that they form a huge community in themselves, called the Non-Resident Indians. These NRIs are a constant source of income for India in terms of foreign exchange. With their remittances home, they contribute substantially to building up the countrys foreign exchange. Thus, this brain drain is and will continue unless we put a stopper by providing them with more working facilities at home and give them more than the other ordinary brains in terms of pecuniary benefits. As long as we cant do this for them or dont do this for them the brain drain cannot be stopped and the best of Indians will continue to find homes abroad. While they continue to go out we, the Indians will have to continue being happy with the fact that they have at least become a force to reckon with, and they get a lot of name and fame.
